My go to Chinese in the Merle Hay area. Always fresh and hot, with big portions. The food always has a lot of flavor. The only thing I don't like, is that they only serve one type of soup each day so you either only can get hot and sour or egg drop, BUT, I like them both, so it's not that big of a deal. Also, very quick. My go to is the Kung Pao chicken.

Pretty good. Szechwan wasn't very spicy but good Sweet and sour sauce ( a apple sauce concoction,) was something I didn't care for but overall a good meal and good price.

Hot, fast and delicious! Pot stickers are delish! We call ahead and in 15 minutes it's ready to be picked up. We get it home and its still Hot! I hate my food cold and they have never given me cold food. Must try!

My go to take out. My family and I have been eating here for almost 15 years. It's extremely fast, good quantity of food and reasonable prices. I never have to wait long. You come here when you want comfort food. Im sure there are healthy items but I always get the crab rangoon, mixed fried rice (has beef, shrimp and chicken) and kung pao chicken. Usually I can get 3 meals out of it. Never disappointed.

The fried rice was different from any other I've ever had, as it appears they do not mix in soy sauce or any other condiment when preparing it--it was almost steamed rice with vegetables. Certainly more healthful and perhaps less Americanized than most other restaurants. They were also happy to accommodate my request for spicy chicken with broccoli, which was appreciated. The sweet and sour sauce they serve is interesting--its in a squeeze bottle on the table and didn't seem to carry very much flavor and was very gloppy.. Actual hot mustard didn't appear to be available, only packets of the sub-quality Chinese mustard every inexpensive Oriental restaurant offers. The portions were very generous for $8 and each dinner meal comes with two crab rangoons as well. With many similar (and slightly better) options nearby, I wouldn't make a trip out of my way to eat here, but if you're in the area and want a quick bite, this would certainly be a reasonable option, if you keep in mind that it is Chinese fast food and not gourmet dining.

This place is EXACTLY what fast food/take out Chinese is supposed to be! Fast, fresh, and flavorful, and a great value. This place isn't far from where I live and finally decided to check it out for lunch. First, they have a huge selection of lunch specials that are around $5.25...that's such a great value for what you get! It's a huge plate of food (I couldn't even finish it all!), and my sweet and sour chicken was perfect- made to order, large pieces of fresh veggies (onion, carrots, green pepper) , and the chicken was fried perfectly with a sweet sauce over it. It also came with a tasty egg roll and egg drop soup- to be honest, the soup was my least favorite. It's a bit pale (doesn't look like they use the yolk of the egg?) and has corn in it, which is not my thing. No problem with service- made to order, but fast and fresh. There was also no problem with getting steamed white rice instead of fried. (I'm not sure why someone would ask to substitute a spice? Chinese food is Chinese food. Let the cooks do thier job.) This place is just a basic, older restaurant with counter service or take out- Yes, it has avocado green walls and nothing special for decor, but the place is absolutely spotlessly clean. They have definitely been in business here for a long time because they do Chinese food right! You can keep your PF Chang's, I'll be coming back here instead.

Best Fast Chinese I've had. Empress Chicken with a cup of hot and sour soup is my go to. Perfect level of spicy mellowed with a pinch of sweetness. Friendly and fast service. She doesn't deliver, but with call ahead, it will be ready when you get there.

Shang Yuen is one of my favorite Chinese places in Des Moines. Nothing earth-shattering about it, but the staff is always friendly and has never gotten my order wrong. The lunch special is a great deal, about $6 for an entree, soup, and an egg roll (although I always substitute for 2 crab rangoon). The food is just what I want Chinese fast food to be - delicious and fresh. I just wish that they had delivery!

Generous helping for the price (hence 2 instead of 1 star) I'm not so sure about the fresh bit. Egg drop soup pretty good - otherwise exactly what two stars says "Meh, I've experienced better." Pork + Veggies ok Sesame chicken not so great

The chicken fried rice is delicious. Large portions and very filling. I usually get my food to go and the wait is very short.

This is one of my favorite Chinese places in Des Moines. I'd never been there before this year, but go about once a month or so now, and I've never had a bad experience. The food is inexpensive, but well-prepared, and very tasty. Compared to some place like Red China Bistro, the decor is certainly lacking, but I'd choose Sheng Yuen's food over almost every other Chinese place in town.

It is what it is. Inexpensive Chinese food that is pretty tasty. Doesn't have the greatest atmosphere but it doesn't deter from the enjoyment of the meal. Highly recommended for anyone looking for inexpensive fast quality Chinese food.

This establishment has been in the Des Moines area for upwards of 20 years+. The food is fresh, well seasoned, and has many of the same flavors as you would find in traditional Chinese dishes. (Source: I studied abroad in China for 12 months in college) The owners are great people and will always talk some football or sports with me when I stop by. This is a solid small, local business that is supported wholely by locals. If Shang Yuen was as bad as the two "1 star reviewers" made it out to be, then I don't think it would be around for 2 decades. Give Shang Yuen a shot. Please ignore Mia R.'s self righteous yearning of "my way or the highway" mentality. It's unnatural. Please ignore Justin W.'s personal (and serious/embarassing) case of Irritable Bowel Syndrome that he tried to blame on the food. This business is ran by a family who are making an honest living serving some great authentic dishes in Des Moines. Give it a shot.

Very good fast food Chinese. Good sauces, good egg drop and hot and sour. Egg roll and crab Rangoon are pedestrian. It is a bit greasy so if you have a sensitive tummy, not for you.

Depressing atmosphere, but the food was decent enough...until I thought my intestines were plotting a coup against the rest of my body. I usually have a pretty iron clad stomach so it is always troubling when I eat somewhere and end up sick. Usually the culprit is copious amounts of MSG, but in this instance I think the chicken was undercooked or even a bit past its peak. Places like this are a dime a dozen, so I won't be giving them a second chance. It's a shame.

I haven't been there since the owner told me that I couldn't have extra of a particular spice I liked put in my food. There are too many good Chinese fast food places to eat at one where they are not accomidating. The food was okay, but nothing unusual.

This joint is awesome. Des Moines doesn't have shit for food Chinese and I can tell you this - this is about as good as it gets for Chinese in this town. I always get the general tso's chicken. They definitely have it spiced correctly, it has the spiciness and finger tang that makes me happy. Their crab Rangoons appear to be hand made and not frozen which is a huge plus. And like others have said, the sweet & sour sauce has an apple saucey consistency to it. I actually love it. Funny thing about the restaurant is, they keep the Asians out front but once they slide open the dark tinted window that the food comes out of, you can see Mexicans in back lol, it's good food though.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city.
